    The Speaker:

Cassie Holmes is a chaired professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, an award-winning teacher and researcher on time and happiness, and bestselling author of Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most.

Happier Hour is a Wall Street Journal Bestseller and was selected as an Amazon Best Book of the Year, a “must read” by Forbes, the Washington Post, and the Financial Times, and was featured in such outlets as the Today Show, CBS Mornings, CNN, NPR’s Hidden Brain, and the We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

AROHE is partnering with the nonprofit organization DOROT to offer this session exploring the experience of people aging on their own—without a partner, children, or family close by.  DEROT will introduce the Aging Alone Together approach—centered on connection, community, and practical support.

        Participants will learn:

        • What it means to be a solo ager today

        • How to reframe aging alone through connection and community

        • Key differences among solo agers and their needs

        • How “solo ageism” shows up and how to address it

        • Practical ways to build and strengthen support networks

        • Where to start in finding “your people” and support

We’ll also highlight programs and opportunities that help sustain connection in later life.

At its core, this session is about moving from aging alone to aging with community, support, and belonging.

Bios: Claire Solomon Nisen, LMSW, MPH, manages DOROT’s Lasting Impressions programs, which includes Aging Alone Together®, a flagship program for solo agers. Claire learns with and from solo agers from across the country through AAT, and other virtual and in-person offerings, every day. Claire earned a B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College, and MSW and MPH degrees from Columbia.

Amy Stein-Milford, DOROT’s Director of Onsite and Special Programs, oversees DOROT’s in-person, online and telephone group programs and led the Aging Alone Together curriculum redesign, advancing the organization's mission to reduce social isolation and strengthen community among older adults. She brings 25+ years of experience building initiatives at the intersection of community, culture and social impact.
