We are finding our way after the pandemic, including making new friends and losing connections from previous groups and circles. Based on a study from Harvard, the number one challenge people face in retirement is not being able to replace the social connections they had through work. Dr. Vivek Murthy, the surgeon general recently came out with an advisory on the healing effects of social connection and community in fighting an epidemic of loneliness and isolation. Dr. Murthy warned that a lack of social connection is having a major impact on our mental and physical health.

AROHE has invited Carla Perissinotto, MD, MHS, professor of medicine and geriatrician, University of California, San Francisco to speak on "Health impacts of Social Isolation and Loneliness." Dr. Perissinotto is a champion of boosting social wellbeing for older adults and is a leader in the field. At a U.S. Senate Hearing in June 2020, she is quoted "Being connected to others is widely considered a fundamental human need, crucial to both well-being and survival.”

Many of the programs that retirement organizations (ROs) offer help to alleviate loneliness and social isolation as part of a larger goal of keeping retirees connected to the community and intellectual stimulation they enjoy. Following Dr. Perissinotto's talk, we invite participants to join in discussion about how ROs can help retirees navigate the challenges faced by loneliness and social connections.

The webinar is scheduled for 10-11:30 a.m. PDT, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. MDT, 12-1:30 p.m. CDT, 1-2:30 p.m. EDT.
